Design And Validation Of Computer Protocols

Author(s) : Gerard J. Holzmann
Publication Date : 1991
Publisher : Prentice Hall

Book excerpts:

Protocols are sets of rules that govern the interaction of concurrent processes in distributed systems. Protocol design is therefore closely related to a number of established fields, such as operating systems, computer networks, data transmission, and data communications. It is rarely singled out and studied as a discipline in its own right.

Designing a logically consistent protocol that can be proven correct, however, is a challenging and often frustrating task. It can already be hard to convince ourselves of the validity of a sequentially executed program. In distributed systems we must reason about concurrently executed, interacting programs.

Design And Validation Of Computer Protocols is intended as a guide to protocol design and analysis, rather than as a guide to standards and formats. It discusses design issues instead of applications. Two issues, therefore, are beyond the scope of this text: network control (including routing, addressing, and congestion control) and implementation. There is, however, no shortage of texts on both topics. The design problem is addressed here as a fundamental and challenging issue, rather than as an irritating practical obstacle to the development of reliable communication systems. The aim of the book is to make you familiar with all the issues of protocol validation and protocol design.

Book excerpts:

Claude Shannon's 1948 paper "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" gave birth to the twin disciplines of information theory and coding theory. The basic goal is efficient and reliable communication in an uncooperative (and possibly hostile) environment, in form of error-correcting codes.

To be efficient, the transfer of information must not require a prohibitive amount of time and effort. To be reliable, the received data stream must resemble the transmitted stream to within narrow tolerances. These two desires will always be at odds, and the fundamental problem is to reconcile them as best we can.

At an early stage the mathematical study of such questions broke into the two broad areas. Information theory is the study of achievable bounds for communication and is largely probabilistic and analytic in nature. Coding theory then attempts to realize the promise of these bounds by models which are constructed through mainly algebraic means. Shannon was primarily interested in the information theory. Shannon's colleague Richard Hamming had been laboring on error-correction for early computers even before Shannon's 1948 paper, and he made some of the first breakthroughs of coding theory.

Although these notes shall discuss these areas as mathematical subjects, it must always be remembered that the primary motivation for such work comes from its practical engineering applications. Mathematical beauty can not be the sole gauge of worth. Throughout this manuscript, one should concentrate on the algebra of coding theory, but keep in mind the fundamental bounds of information theory and the practical desires of engineering.

Intended Audience

These notes were aimed at advanced undergraduate / beginning graduate as both a course and self-study text.

Fundamentals of Wireless Communication

Author(s) : David Tse, University of California, Berkeley and Pramod Viswanath, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
ISBN : 0521845270
Pages : 586
Publisher : Cambridge University Press
Publication Date : June 2005

Terms and Conditions

The book is copyright (c) Cambridge University Press. The online version of this book (available on this website without the exercises) is subject to the same copyright rules as traditional books (eg. copying the book onto paper (ie. printing) is not permitted).

Book Excerpts:

The past decade has seen many advances in physical-layer wireless communication theory and their implementation in wireless systems. This book aims to present modern wireless communication concepts in a coherent and unified manner and to illustrate the concepts in the broader context of the wireless systems on which they have been applied.

Topics covered include MIMO (multiple input multiple output) communication, space-time coding, opportunistic communication, OFDM and CDMA. The concepts are illustrated using many examples from wireless systems such as GSM, IS-95 (CDMA), IS-856(1xEV-DO), Flash OFDM and ArrayComm SDMA systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the interplay between concepts and their implementation in systems.

Structure of the Book:

This book is a web of interlocking concepts. The concepts can he structured roughly into three levels:

1. channel characteristics and modeling;
2. communication concepts and techniques;
3. application of these concepts in a system context.

A wireless communication engineer should have an understanding of the concepts at all three levels as well as the tight interplay between the levels. This book emphasizes this interplay by interlacing the chapters across these levels rather than presenting the topics sequentially from one level to the next.

Intended Audience:

This book is written as a textbook for a first-year graduate course in wireless communication. The expected background is solid undergraduate/beginning graduate courses in signals and systems, probability and digital communication.

Smile "Virtually every aspect of sending a signal through the air is discussed from power, frequency, noise, fading, interference, and from a hardware standpoint the all important antennas including design, positioning, reflections, and shadowing."

Smile "Not only the author presents the text superbly supported with mathematical explanations but also uses felicitously chosen examples from the gamut of wireless technology to put forth the concepts."
